Simon is energetic and passionate about teens. With a Bachelors Degree in Youth Culture and over a decade of experience mentoring teens, Simon is masterful at building healthy rapport, cutting through the BS and speaking to the root of the issues teens are facing. His eye for detail and competitive spirit keeps him focused, while his whimsical and adventurous personality keeps him from being too serious.
Simon's journey to mentoring teens started when he was a teen himself. Coming from a low- income divorced family and struggling in school because of his learning disabilities (dyslexic and ADHD) Simon was bullied. Simon experienced first hand the power of mentoring thanks to key adults building into his life while he grew up.
Using the principles from Gallup’s StrengthsFinders, Impact Society Heroes, and a unique gender specific character template, Simon has successfully navigated teens through relationship conflict, communication breakdown, critical thinking, and self-awareness. This has helped teens become happier, more focused and teachable. Simon has spoken to thousands of teens across Canada, and has trained over 100 youth workers to draw out the best in teens and their families.
Not long ago, I officiated at a funeral for a girl who died of a drug overdose; she was 17. Jamie* was a beautiful teen who came from a stable, loving home. She was bright, artistically talented, and instantly loved by whomever she met. How could this happen? Taking a quick look at teens and teen culture, life seems to be getting better. Access to sports is easier, a high percentage of teens are graduating grade 12 and enrolling into post secondary education, teen pregnancy is on the decline, living in broken homes is in a holding pattern; even economically, teens have more opportunity for employment than even 5 years ago. However, if we have the courage to look closely, beneath the bravado of teen excellence and success we will find a silent killer. Entitlement, consumerism, and narcissism are working hand in hand to corrode the solid character of our teens. Left untreated, this pandemic will wipe out generations of teens following in the footsteps of fallen politicians, celebrities, and sport icons. The overwhelming pressure for more is literally killing our teens.
*Jamie’s name has been changed to protect and honour her memory.
You have heard it said that an “apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Our society has known about prevention for generations, paying close attention to our physical health with exercise, healthy eating, and avoiding damaging choices. Resisting the urge when a triple grandee, non-fat, half sweet, no whip, white chocolate mocha is seductively calling your name may not seem relevant in the moment. However, the return on your self-discipline over time could save your life and your bank account! Over the years, Simon has valued walking with hundreds of teens through pain, joy, defeat, and triumph. What made some teens stand out over others, regardless of their life situation, was their Character Training. Teens can learn from their mistakes, but wouldn’t you rather your teen avoid life altering mistakes altogether? Proactive mentoring is a highly personalized program that utilizes your teen’s strengths, passions, and weaknesses to discover, develop, and mature their character.
Releasing Canada’s greatest natural resource by developing the character, identity and social awareness of teenagers through relationship and discovery. Simon Says Teen Mentoring offers clarity and control when life seems chaotic.
Teens Are The Key To Changing The World And Need To Be Celebrated: When supported, equipped and released, teens are an unstoppable force that will shape our future. If Canada can celebrate their tenacity, adaptability and passion, while at the same time seeing teens as both eager students and wise teachers, the future of Canada will be bright.
Life Is Better When You Live Out Of Your Strengths: When people truly discover what they are good at and offer it as a gift to the world, everybody wins. Sharing our strengths brings life to you, as well as life to those who receive it.
Make Life Simple: Often when life is complicated, we feel overwhelmed and lost. Simplifying life’s complexities gives us margin to breathe, allowing for calmness and clarity instead of chaos and confusion.
Speak The Truth With Gentleness And Respect: People want to hear the truth, not just hear what makes them feel good. Because the truth can sometimes sting, it needs to be packaged in a gentle and respectful way so that the maximum yield of wisdom can be extracted.
Discovery Through Creativity: Creativity allows opportunity for self-discovery and self-awareness. When you are able to connect an emotion with a learned lesson, your ability to move to action is substantially greater.
Life Is An Adventure: An adventure is something that is unfolded before you like a flower blooming. It’s risky. It’s exciting. At times it can be dangerous or painful. It’s joyful and inviting. Everyone deserves to be invited into an adventure and have the opportunity to get into the action.
Discovery Through Relationships: As you’re on your adventure, nothing is sweeter than when you get to share that experience with someone else. When you have a wingman to help you explore and discover something new about yourself or them, it’s a rich connection.
Our Personal Story Is Part Of A Larger Narrative: Taking part in the larger narrative gives us a broader perspective on our life and pushes us to discover a deeper purpose than just the physical. It also offers us the opportunity to give up control and safety in exchange for freedom and intriguing mystery.
